Sextet
Eurico Martins
About the Ensemble: Sextet Eurico Martins
The Sexteto/Septeto Eurico Martins project is a musical group born within the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra and developed under the motto “remember the past, write the future”.
Presented on June 25, 2019, it is formed by players belonging to the Orquestra de Mandolins da Madeira and is based on two factors: in the history of the musical formation that gave rise to the current project, the Sextet/Septet Passos de Freitas, and in the due tribute to the mentor and “entrepreneur” of the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra, Maestro Eurico Martins.
The Sextet/Septet Passos de Freitas has its origins in the 10th decade of the 19th century, having been founded by the Madeiran professor Fernando de Ascensão Clairouin (1897-1962). The name “Passos de Freitas” was itself a tribute to Dr. Passos de Freitas who implemented the mandolin tradition on Madeira Island and formed the first mandolin musical group in São Roque, which today is recognized as the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra.
The adaptation of the name “Eurico Martins” in the current project involves the fact that, on the one hand, he was the “father” of the musical, social and tradition evolution of the mandolin in the Orquestra de Mandolins da Madeira and in the parish of São Roque during more than 20 years, and also the fact that Maestro Eurico Martins himself had this dream of re-editing this historic part that encompasses the Orchestra and the Association within it, the Recreio Musical União da Mocidade.
Fulfilling this old dream, the objective of this project will be to perpetuate, in an indelible way, the history of a group known and appreciated in its time and to preserve the history of music and the tradition of the mandolin.
